Whenever a major honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored that year
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
